    Power, Punishment, and Possibility

In partnership with KHopeacetic, join us for a conversation with Dr. Noah Dolim that begins with the 1930s Massie trial in Hawai‘i, a case where false accusations and racialized violence, backed by the authority of the legal system, led to the murder of a Native Hawaiian man. As we revisit this pivotal moment in Hawai‘i’s history, we’ll examine how narratives of innocence have long been shaped by race, gender, and power, and how those dynamics still echo in today’s systems of punishment. At the same time, we’ll hold space for the women most directly impacted by incarceration today. We’re honored to be joined by Lea Nepomuceno from Beauty Beyond Bars (named one of Teen Vogue's 21 under 21) for a conversation about the urgent, everyday needs of incarcerated women, including access to hygiene and care.

    Listening to Liberty

In partnership with KHopeacetic, join Nurturing Wāhine Fund and In The Vā for a conversation centered on the latest issue of Liberty, the powerful newsletter from No Labels, the Creative Writing Project at the Women’s Community Correctional Center on O‘ahu. The newsletter, Once Upon a (Doing) Time, invites us into stories, mo‘olelo, and reimaginings of life, justice, and healing from the voices of incarcerated women. We'll be engaging with the newsletter like a book club. We're gathering to reflect, share our thoughts, and explore our personal and collective connections to the prison system. As part of this conversation, we'll each write a short reflection in response to the issue, which will be shared with the women at WCCC as a way of honoring their voices and continuing the dialogue beyond the page.

Rooted in Redistribution: A Conversation with Toi Smith about Wealth and Resource Sharing

A powerful conversation with Toi Smith on what we’re truly upholding when we accept funding from wealthy donors or institutions that promote empowerment in name, but undermine it in practice. We’ll also dive into what funding feels right under the current administration—how to navigate systems that claim to support communities while perpetuating harm—and share practical steps for building regenerative, community-rooted models of wealth redistribution in Hawai‘i and beyond. This is an invitation to imagine liberation that isn’t performative, but deeply grounded in community care.

Very Demanding. Very Minimizing: Imposter Syndrome in Nonprofits

In her thought-provoking article, Esther Saehyun Lee boldly challenges the status quo of the nonprofit sector, writing, "I am an imposter. I don’t belong in the nonprofit sector—as it is. I refuse to subscribe to the values of white saviorism, colonialism, donor worship, poverty tourism, and the self-congratulatory attitude of 'doing good.'" In this discussion, Esther, Vu Le (author of the popular Nonprofit AF blog), and Aleeka Morgan (director of Nurturing Wāhine Fund) will explore key themes from Lee's article and delve into the experience of imposter syndrome within the nonprofit space. Join us for an engaging conversation on how these dynamics shape our sense of belonging and influence the sector.

Film screening and Discussion at Women's Community Correctional Center:

At NWF, our mission is to ensure everyone is included in our movement to end systemic adversity. That’s why we are hosting events at prisons.

Kemba Smith was sentenced to 24.5 years in prison without the possibility of parole, despite being a first-time, nonviolent offender who was seven months pregnant. A movie was made about her life. We’re grateful she will speak with the women at WCCC, an all-female prison, about rebuilding their lives.
